Battery Health — Most Important Check

Battery at 80% health means it holds 80% of original charge. A laptop that once lasted 8 hours now gives ~6.5 hours.

85–95%Excellent — near new

Windows: Open Command Prompt → run:

Check Design Capacity vs Full Charge Capacity in the generated report.

MacBook: Hold Option → click battery icon → check Condition. Or System Info → Hardware → Power → Cycle Count (below 500 = healthy).

Processor (CPU) Generation

An Intel Core i7 from 2016 vs 2021 is a completely different experience. Generation matters more than just the name.

• Intel: 10th Gen (2019) or newer — look for "Core i5-10xxx / i7-11xxx"
• AMD: Ryzen 3000 series or newer
• Apple: M1 or newer — avoid Intel MacBooks if possible

Avoid 7th and 8th Gen Intel for anything beyond basic browsing in 2026.

RAM — Amount and Upgradeability

• 8GB minimum — general use, office, study
• 16GB — multitasking, design, development

Check if RAM is upgradeable. MacBooks have RAM soldered in permanently. Dell Latitude and Lenovo ThinkPad usually allow RAM upgrades.

• Not domain-joined — corporate MDM can lock you out of admin on your own device

Windows: Settings → System → About → confirm activated. MacBook: verify out of previous owner's Apple ID before paying.

Walk Away From These

5 Red Flags to Avoid

No warranty offered. Any reputable UAE seller should offer at least 3–6 months. Walk away from "sold as-is" listings.

Battery health not disclosed. If a seller refuses to share the battery report, assume it's below 70%.

Price too good to be true. A Grade A Core i7, 16GB RAM laptop for AED 400 is almost certainly stolen, faulty, or misrepresented.

Still domain-joined or MDM-locked. Corporate laptops not properly wiped can prevent you from making admin changes on your own device.

Vague specs listing. "Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM" without a generation number is hiding outdated hardware. Always ask for the full model number.
